Chinese Hospital proudly hosted its 126th Anniversary Gala on April 17, bringing together community members, local partners, elected officials, and longtime supporters to honor more than a century of service.

As San Francisco’s last independent community hospital, Chinese Hospital continues to be a vital healthcare provider for many, especially new Chinese immigrants, seniors, and underserved populations. The Gala celebrated this enduring mission while also addressing the growing challenges the hospital faces, including financial pressures, operational hurdles, and inadequate reimbursement for the majority of patients who rely on Medicare and Medi-Cal.

“Being named one of America’s Best-in-State Hospitals by Newsweek for the second consecutive year is a testament to the dedication of our staff and the unwavering support of our community,” said Dr. Jian Zhang, CEO of Chinese Hospital. “But as an independent hospital, we cannot do this alone. We need continued support from our community members, local organizations, and government leaders to protect this vital resource.”

The evening also featured an awards ceremony recognizing individuals who exemplify leadership and service:

  • Community Healthcare Champion – Phil Ting
  • Outstanding Physician Leadership – Dr. Edward Chow
  • Outstanding Community Leadership – Dr. Kin Yee

Proceeds from the Gala will support a major initiative: the development of a new Oncology Clinic and Chemotherapy Center. This $5 million project will expand cancer care services in Chinatown and surrounding neighborhoods, where access to local, language-concordant care is essential, especially for elderly patients who face difficulties traveling long distances for treatment and have limited English proficiency.

While Chinese Hospital continues to move forward through innovation and strong community partnerships, financial challenges remain significant. Rising operating costs and limited reimbursement from public insurance programs continue to strain resources. Nevertheless, thanks to the generosity and trust of the community, Chinese Hospital remains steadfast in its mission.

“Despite ongoing financial challenges, our commitment to delivering high-quality, culturally and linguistically appropriate care has never wavered,” said Dr. Roger Eng, Chairman of the Chinese Hospital Board of Trustees. “We are here today because of the support of our community. We invite everyone to consider Chinese Hospital for your healthcare needs and to choose CCHP as your health plan. With your continued trust and support, we will be here tomorrow—and for generations to come.”

Chinese Hospital extends its heartfelt appreciation to everyone who made the Gala a success, and to the donors, sponsors, and volunteers who continue to stand by its side.
