Chinese Hospital is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of its 2026 Board of Trustees Installation Ceremony, held on January 23. This event introduced the distinguished Board members who will guide the hospital’s strategic vision for the coming year.
Founded in 1899, Chinese Hospital has been a trusted healthcare institution for more than a century, delivering culturally responsive care tailored to the needs of San Francisco’s diverse communities.
For 2026, Dr. Roger S. Eng continues to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Mr. Harvey Louie continues to serve as Vice Chair, reflecting the Board’s confidence in their leadership during a pivotal time for community healthcare.
Despite industry-wide pressures, Chinese Hospital made significant progress in 2025, advancing key initiatives that strengthen care delivery and long-term sustainability. Highlights include:
- Continued recognition on Newsweek’s Best-in-State Hospitals list
- Secured $1 million in state funding, with support from Senator Scott Wiener, to advance a permanent Oncology Clinic and Chemotherapy Center
- Achieved Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) certification for its Skilled Nursing Facility, enabling direct patient admissions
- Awarded a Peninsula Health Care District grant to expand access and outreach in San Mateo County
- Earned the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus recognition for evidence-based stroke care
- Received the 2025 Frank E. Staggers Sr., M.D. Outstanding Ethnic Physician Organization Award for leadership in culturally responsive, community-focused care
The 2026 Board installation coincides with a period of leadership transition at Chinese Hospital. Following the retirement of Dr. Jian Zhang, former Chief Executive Officer, after 32 years of dedicated service, she will continue to support the organization as a Board Advisor, as the hospital continues to build upon the strong foundation established under her leadership.
Chinese Hospital is led by Michael Chung, Chief Executive Officer, who joined the organization in 2020 and previously served as Chief Financial Officer and President, where he played a key role in advancing strategic initiatives, strengthening financial stewardship, and supporting the hospital’s long-term sustainability.
Michael Chung, CEO of Chinese Hospital, said,
“Rising healthcare costs, limited Medicare and Medi-Cal reimbursement, and the growing demand for safety-net services continue to challenge community hospitals. As the last independent community hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area, we remain steadfast in our mission and will continue working closely with our Board, physicians, and employees to ensure our community has access to essential health services.”
Dr. Roger S. Eng, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said,
“Chinese Hospital remains committed to serving as a stable, mission-driven healthcare provider for San Francisco’s immigrant, senior, and working families. As a critical access and safety-net hospital, we deliver high-quality care efficiently while helping reduce pressure on the City’s broader public healthcare system. Working in partnership with community providers, health plans, and public leaders, our focus is on preserving access, continuity of care, and culturally competent services for the communities that rely on us most.”
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Dr. Eng reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration with government leaders and community partners, and emphasized Chinese Hospital’s ongoing commitment to serving patients and families through both its hospital services and its community health plan.
