Chinese Hospital marked its 127th Anniversary Gala, bringing together community leaders, healthcare partners, elected officials, and supporters to celebrate its enduring legacy and reaffirm its commitment to serving the community.

This year’s milestone commemorated both 127 years of service and the 10th anniversary of the Chinese Hospital Patient Tower. Since opening in 2016, the Patient Tower has been a cornerstone of care, delivering high-quality, linguistically and culturally appropriate services to countless patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it played a critical role in addressing urgent community needs, as physicians, nurses, and staff delivered safe, timely care under extraordinary circumstances.

As the San Francisco’s last independent community hospital, Chinese Hospital remains an essential part of the city’s healthcare system, particularly for new immigrants, seniors, and underserved populations. The Gala highlighted this mission while acknowledging ongoing challenges, including rising costs, workforce shortages, and limited Medicare and Medi-Cal reimbursement. Despite these pressures, Chinese Hospital was recognized as one of Newsweek’s Best-in-State Hospitals for the third consecutive year, reflecting its commitment to quality care and community trust.

“Chinese Hospital was built by the community, for the community. More than a century later, that responsibility continues to guide everything we do,” said Michael Chung, CEO of Chinese Hospital. “Looking ahead, we remain focused on expanding access to care, investing in critical infrastructure, and ensuring we are well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of our community.”

He added, “We are deeply grateful to our Board of Trustees and Gala Planning Committee for their leadership and dedication in making this celebration possible.”

The evening also featured an awards ceremony recognizing individuals whose leadership and generosity have made a lasting impact:

  • Outstanding Physician Leadership – Dr. Dominic Tse
  • Outstanding Community Leadership – Robert Wong
  • Top Philanthropist of the Year – Vincent Ho

Proceeds from the Gala will support the modernization of the Patient Tower, upgrades to essential medical equipment, and the development of a permanent Oncology Clinic and Chemotherapy Center.

Amid ongoing financial pressures, Chinese Hospital continues to move forward through innovation and strong partnerships, remaining steadfast in its mission to provide accessible, affordable, and culturally responsive care.

“For 127 years, Chinese Hospital has remained a vital resource for our community,” said Dr. Roger Eng, Chairman of the Chinese Hospital Board of Trustees. “As the only independent community hospital left in the entire Bay Area, our role is more important than ever. Sustaining this mission requires the continued partnership of elected officials, healthcare partners, community leaders, and supporters. Together, we are advancing community-based care and ensuring it remains accessible, responsive, and patient-centered.”
