Chinese Hospital is honored to receive a $100,000 gift from Mr. Yung Pun Huang, who is the honorary president of the World Federation of Fuzhou Associations Ltd and the founder of Union International Food Company, and this gracious donation was the second gift he gave to Chinese Hospital.
Mr. Huang’s story and reason for giving dates back to 1980, when he immigrated to the U.S. and first settled in San Francisco Chinatown. During that time, Mr. Huang relied on Chinese Hospital to care for his medical needs.
“I was very impressed by the way Chinese Hospital served the Chinese community and I’ve always wanted to give back to the community,” said Mr. Huang.
Amazed and inspired by stories of the Chinese Hospital’s efforts to protect the community from the COVID-19 outbreaks, Mr. Huang made his first donation of $100,000 during the peak of the pandemic to support a variety of COVID-19 initiatives and services including testing, contact tracing, vaccination, treatment and care, community outreach and bilingual education campaign. In less than 2 years, Mr. Huang decided to donate another $100,000 in support of Chinese Hospital’s continued efforts to keep the community safe. His generosity will help Chinese Hospital to prepare for future disasters, and ensure that the community, especially the new immigrants and elderly, will continue to have access to culturally competent and exceptional care as he received.
“Philanthropy is a powerful resource, especially during a health crisis,” said Dr. Jian Zhang, Chinese Hospital CEO. “We are incredibly grateful for Mr. Huang’s support and the trust he places in Chinese Hospital. As we continue to lead the community’s response to COVID-19, this remarkable gift will allow us to continue providing the vital services, and meet the immediate and long-term health care needs of the community. The impact of this gift will be felt across Chinese Hospital and the community we serve.”
“We are so fortunate to have phenomenal philanthropists and wonderful supporters like Mr. Huang, who generously gives back to the community and help those in need,” said Mr. Kitman Chan, Chinese Hospital Board of Trustees Chair. “This generous donation will undoubtedly benefit our patients, our staff, and our community.”
According to Mr. Huang, he is passionate about giving back to educational and health care causes, such as Chinese Hospital. Among other causes, Mr. Huang had previously funded the construction of a school and hospital in his hometown of Minhou County in Fujian Province. Generous yet humble, Mr. Huang attributes his ability for charitable giving to his lifestyle, which he described as “self-disciplined, diligent, and thrifty.”
Mr. Huang is a support of Fremont Mayor Lily Mei and we are fortunate to have her as our guest speaker at today’s ceremony.
Mayor Lei was touched by Mr. Huang’s stories and his willingness to give back to communities. “You can spend the money on yourself and make a difference for yourself but you can spend and invest it in the community to build a better future. That’s what Mr. Huang chose to do.” She added, “We realized that many people still struggle with access to healthcare, this little difference will make a huge difference in our community.”
In recognition of Mr. Huang generosity and contribution, Chinese Hospital named a family waiting room on the 6th floor in his honor.
