About this role
Position Summary
Assist patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care to acutely ill patients that is appropriate to patient’s age and developmental stage and assist in maintenance of a safe and clean environment. Performs various duties necessary to address the personal, hygienic, comfort and safety needs of the patient. The HA works in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The HA will demonstrate competency and commitment in achieving organizational and nursing department goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS FOR SPECIALTY UNITS:
- HA must be able to perform skills to meet the special needs and behavior of a specific age population:
- Medical/Surgical (M/S) Units – Adolescent to frail elderly
- Surgical Suite/Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) – Adolescent to frail elderly
- Same-Day Surgery Unit (SDSU) / Endoscopy Suite (ENDO) – 13 years to frail elderly
- Emergency Department– Birth to frail elderly
- Demonstrates competency and professional responsibility in selected psychomotor skills (procedures) that is appropriate to the patient’s age and developmental stage and allowed within the HA scope of care.
- Demonstrates basic knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology, Electronic Medical records (EMR), and familiarity with typing/computer keyboards and using a mouse.
- Transport of patients between units.
- Transport of specimens and other necessary supplies.
- Promotes and maintains a safe working environment and ensures safe conduct in all aspects of job performance.
- Maintains Chinese Hospital’s attendance and punctuality standards in a consistent and regular manner.
- Bathes, cleans, dresses, and undresses patients.
- Answers call lights to determine patient needs in a timely and professional manner.
- Support other clerical duties as assigned for patient care.
- Assists in, basic patient care, assisting with patient mobility, answering patient call lights in a timely manner, sitter activities, and other activities designated by the Nursing.
- Other duties as assigned.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Prolonged standing
- Frequent bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, and lifting up to or > 100 pounds with assistance/equipment.
- The ability to walk up and downstairs.
- Ability to move about quickly and adjust to short notice changes – emergency, unusual or routine
- Must be proficient in the use of medical and office equipment
- Ability to assist and/or perform procedures including those requiring strenuous manipulation.
Verbal:
- Must be able to articulate and be understood in interactions with patients, visitors, and staff.
- Must be able to convey spoken instructions accurately, quickly, and loudly if necessary.
Auditory:
- Must be able to hear in interactions with patients, visitors, and staff without using loud volumes.
- Must be able to hear and differentiate telephone, patient call system, equipment/telemetry alarms, and overhead pages.
- Must be able to comprehend language without the use of lip-reading.
- Must be able to auscultate B/P using a stethoscope.
Visual:
- Must be able to see with clarity at a distance of 20 inches, patient documents, computer and equipment panels, cardiac monitors and to adequately assess patient’s condition, i.e. respiratory status, skin color, skin breakdown, etc.
- Must be able to see with clarity at a distance of 20 feet to aid in transporting and maneuvering beds, gurneys, and wheelchairs. Must be able to assess patients’ needs, greet visitors, and direct emergency personnel adequately.
- Must have the ability to focus, judge distances, distinguish colors, and possess good peripheral vision.
Tactile/Smelling:
- Must be able to feel chest wall to identify landmarks for proper lead placement.
- Must be able to differentiate temperature, moisture, presence/absence of pulse during the delivery of care.
- Sense of smell for monitoring the presence or absence of body fluids or fire.
- Ability to handle specialized surgical/medical instruments as appropriate.
- Must pass pre-employment physical and an annual or periodic physical exam and meet departmental standards within required timeframes.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Temperature varied environment, fast pace, frequent interruptions, and ongoing collaboration with health care team members, patient/family, and/or representatives.
- Rare exposure to outside conditions such as rain, hail, extreme heat, cold, or humidity will occur if discharging a patient to a vehicle.
- Moderate noise level exists especially during day shift hours.
- Hospital beds and patient equipment may provide an increased risk for the potential of electrical shock.
- Practices service philosophy standards in all aspects of job performance and promotes positive, supportive work relationships with all members of the hospital workforce.

- Assists with all basic patient hygiene and care needs of the patient, assisting with activities of daily living.
- Answers call lights timely and professionally.
- Follows Hospital and Department policies and procedures at all times, including but not limited to Administrative Manual, Environment of Care, Human Resources, Infection Control, Corporate Compliance, Code of Ethics, etc.
- Attend, actively participate, and complete in-services, training classes, mandatory classes, seminars/workshops, staff meetings, exercises, and drills; read all department communication and assigned materials.
- Customer Service – Provides excellent customer service and shows compassion to all patients, visitors, and co-workers. Seeks feedback to ensure all needs are met. Anticipates and recognizes the concerns of others, even if those concerns are not openly expressed.

Qualifications
Required
- CA Nursing Aide Certification
- Healthcare provider Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification provided by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- High School Diploma or California Certified High school equivalent Course.
- Bilingual Cantonese-speaking preferred
- Basic Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office) (EMR knowledge a plus)
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to effectively present information, both verbal and written.
- Ability to take initiative, adapt to changing priorities, and work independently
- Strong time management and prioritization skills
- Ability to multi-task with a high level of efficiency and attention to detail
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, staff is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and/or listen. He/she uses his/her hands to do computer work, write reports, do equipment set-up/cleaning/storage, clerical support, etc. He/she will be using the phone frequently. Good vision is needed to be able to read schedules, enter accurate data, etc. He/she must have good general health and demonstrate emotional stability so as to carry out the above-enumerated duties.
- Able to lift up to 30 pounds
- Use proper body mechanics when handling equipment
- Standing, walking and moving 50% of the day

Complies with Chinese Hospital Compliance Handbook including Code of Ethics and all statutes, regulations, guidelines applicable to federal and state programs. Responsibilities include, following the guidelines and reporting suspected violations of any statute, regulations, agreements or guidelines applicable to all healthcare programs.
Base Pay Scale: Starting at $30.17 – $35.64 per hour
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
