Why now—and why leadership

Many have asked, “Why Now?” and “What will happen to Chinese Hospital?” My decision to retire is not about stepping away, but about stepping forward to ensure our legacy of compassionate, community-centered care will outlast my tenure.

Leadership is the foundation of our strength. Investing in it now is the surest way to protect our future.

For 126 years, Chinese Hospital has stood as the last independent community hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area, delivering patient-centered, culturally and linguistically appropriate care to those who need it most. But the challenges ahead are real: shifting healthcare economics, workforce shortages, evolving technology, and increasingly complex patient needs. Meeting these challenges requires leaders who understand our community, act decisively, and inspire others to serve with heart.

That’s why we are launching the Dr. Jian Zhang Leadership Fund—a lasting investment to develop leaders at every level, so the values that shaped our past will guide our future.
