Springtime is a time of beauty and renewal. Unfortunately, many of us are unable to enjoy our time outside because of uncomfortable nasal symptoms from allergies. Cough, sore throat, headaches and tiredness are also surprising symptoms of allergies.
Relief from allergic discomfort can be gained with prevention and treatment. The most important is prevention by managing triggers of allergies. Outdoor triggers like pollens are controlled by changing clothes and washing hands, face and hair when coming indoors. Indoor triggers such as dust, dust mites, cigarette smoke and animal dander can be avoided by encasing mattresses and pillows with allergy protective covers, cessation of smoking as much as possible, and removing pets from bedrooms. A HEPA filter vacuum cleaner also works wonders.
Nasal saline sprays manage symptoms by clearing allergens and diluting and removing irritating allergens from the nose and throat. Drinking warm water helps soothe sore throats. Vitamin D deficiency can exacerbate allergy symptoms. Ask your doctor if you need testing or supplementation of vitamin D.
Oral medication, topical steroid nasal sprays and topical eye drops are the final resources for managing allergy symptoms. Steroid levels in the nasal sprays are very tiny and rarely cause side effects. Many families share concerns about steroid use. Ask your doctor about your concerns. You may be surprised to learn that relief from nasal steroids can come with very little risk.
