Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Standards:

  • Assists in maintaining the Hospital’s and Nursing Department’s philosophy through directing and coordinating effective and safe nursing care.
  • Assists in the continuous analysis and evaluation of the Nursing Department by the use of staffing utilization studies, performance improvement activities, and performance evaluations.
  • Assists in ensuring that hospital and Nursing Department standards, policies, procedures, and protocols are followed.
  • Maintains safe and satisfactory working conditions for the staff through continuous monitoring in accordance with hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Assumes initial Incident Command position during an emergency.
  • Implements Hospital Incident Command system to improve emergency management planning, response and recovery for planned and unplanned events.
  • Maintains a high standard of patient care and personnel performance by being aware of the indications pointed out by the performance improvement program and giving special attention to improvement actions.
  • Establishes priorities for patient cares activities and provides for continuity and coordination of patient care.
  • Acts as administrative representative of the hospital in the absence of other administrative personnel.
  • Serves as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems.
  • Determines the issues to be referred to the Administrator on call.
  • Relief for meals and break as necessary.

  • Maintains proficiency in clinical and administrative knowledge and skills.
  • Immediately investigates patient complaints and patient incidents.
  • Responds immediately to all crises or calls for assistance as needed.
  • Utilizes critical thinking/nursing process in resolving patient care problems.
  • Maintains effective communication with staff and administration.
  • Complies with CHA Compliance Handbook including Code of Ethics and all statutes, regulations and guidelines applicable to federal and state programs. Responsibilities include following the guidelines and reporting suspected violations of any statutes, regulations, agreements, or guidelines applicable to all healthcare programs.
  • Demonstrate mission, vision, and values of Chinese Hospital through professional excellence with personal commitment in achieving organizational goals and objectives.
  • Accountable for actions within the scope of practice and responsibilities.

Staffing:

  • Manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs.
  • Supervises nurses and staff and takes administrative responsibilities and ensures adequate staffing for the oncoming shift.
  • Develops and implements staffing plan for shift based on patient acuity, patient census, and available staff.
  • Reviews the need for and recommends changes in standards of staffing according to results of staffing utilization reports.
  • Develops, maintains, and submits required staffing records and associated reports.
  • Reviews staffing patterns, census, and acuity of nursing units to see that staffing is consistent with patient needs and budgetary control; assists in adjusting staff to meet needs and makes rounds to observe daily staff balance.
  • Manages, directs, and coordinates the functions of subordinates. Guides staff members individually on professional and personal matters as appropriate.
  • Maintains a high morale among subordinates by evaluating performance fairly, treating staff in a dignified manner, taking appropriate action with the staff, and keeping the staff informed of matters. Conducts and attends meetings as needed.
  • Supervises staff by the use of recognized effective control mechanisms, including direct observation of staff. Evaluate, implement immediate correction, counseling, and appropriate disciplinary actions, when necessary.
  • Assists in the orientation of nursing personnel, monitors their nursing skills, observes and guides staff to become more proficient in appropriate procedures.
  • Recommends plans for personnel development and counsels with Director of Nursing on the training needs of the staff by being aware of performance improvement indicators and incident report investigations that point out inadequacies of staff performance.
  • Make recommendations for the selection of staff members for cross training and promotions.

Collaboration:

  • Promotes good public relations with patients, visitors, and hospital co-workers.
  • Promotes efficient interdepartmental relationships. Cooperates with other departments and provides for coordinated patient care services.
  • Collects reports from staff on matters related to patient care and/or nursing issues and forwards information to the receiving shift supervisor along with beeper and keys.
  • Assists nurse manager and/or charge nurse in evaluating problems and situations related to patients, families, physicians, or other hospital departments and helps initiate and evaluate actions taken.
  • Coordinates emergency surgery by initiating calls to operating team and provides necessary supplies from Central Supply (when not staffed).
  • Obtains patient’s previous medical records, medications and/or supplies as needed from other departments (when not staffed) to maintain safe, efficient, and therapeutic care to patients on a continuing basis.
  • Implements standardized patient procedure for procurement of death, to include notification of organ and tissue donor organization, physician, and medical examiner as needed.

Performance Improvement:

  • Assists in Performance Improvement Program.
  • Recommends the purchase of materials or equipment for the Nursing Department.
  • Responds immediately to all crises or calls for assistance as needed, and ensures that appropriate documentation, including unusual occurrence reports are completed, per policy.
  • Suggests and/or participates in projects, studies, or committee work.
  • Follows Hospital and Department policies and procedures at all times, including but not limited to: Administrative Manual, Environment of Care, Human Resources, Infection Control, Corporate Compliance, Code of Ethics, etc.
  • Attend, actively participate and complete in-services, training classes, mandatory classes, seminars/workshops, staff meetings, exercises and drills; reads all department communication and assigned materials.
  • Customer Service – Provides excellent customer service and shows compassion to all patients, visitors and co-workers. Seeks feedback to ensure all needs are met. Anticipates and recognizes the concerns of others, even if those concerns are not openly expressed.
  • Communication ­– Keeps manager and team informed of progress, problems, development and plans. Gets along and interacts positively with co-workers and others.
  • Follows Hospital and Department policies and procedures at all times, including but not limited to: Administrative Manual, Environment of Care, Human Resources, Infection Control, Corporate Compliance, Code of Ethics, etc.
  • Accepts and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or equivalency required.
  • Two years acute care clinical experience within past four years required.
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS certificate.
  • Meets screening criteria of Human Resources and Occupational Health.
  • Managerial or supervisory experience preferred.
