Protect Your Skin During Winter

Cold weather, dry air, indoor heating, and frequent handwashing can leave your skin feeling dry, itchy, or irritated. A few simple habits can help protect your skin throughout the winter.

Keep showers short and use warm water.
Limit baths and showers to about five to ten minutes. Hot water can strip moisture from your skin, so choose warm water instead. After bathing, gently pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.
Harsh soaps and heavily scented products can irritate dry or sensitive skin. Use a mild cleanser and avoid over-washing areas that do not need it.

Apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp.
Moisturize after bathing, washing your hands, and whenever your skin feels dry. During winter, a thick cream or ointment may work better than a light lotion. Do not forget dry-prone areas such as your hands, elbows, knees, and feet.

Protect your lips and exposed skin.
Use lip balm or petroleum jelly to help prevent dry, cracked lips. Wear gloves outdoors to protect your hands from cold, dry air.

Use sunscreen every day.
Winter sun can still damage your skin. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to exposed areas, including your face, neck, ears, and hands.

Use a humidifier indoors.
Indoor heating can dry out the air. A humidifier can add moisture back into your home and help prevent your skin from becoming overly dry.

Choose comfortable clothing.
Rough fabrics such as wool can irritate dry skin. Wear soft, loose-fitting clothing or add a cotton layer underneath rougher fabrics.

If your skin becomes painful, cracked, bleeding, or does not improve with home care, speak with a healthcare professional.
