Chinese Hospital proudly announces its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Jian Zhang has been honored as one of the “Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business” by the San Francisco Business Times. This award honors the most powerful and inspiring women across diverse industries in the Bay Area.
Since becoming CEO in 2017, Dr. Zhang has led Chinese Hospital through a period of meaningful growth and transformation. Her leadership has expanded services and advanced health equity for underserved communities. Key initiatives include the development of a Primary Stroke Center in partnership with UCSF Health, the launch of the Hepatitis B Demonstration Project with the California Department of Public Health, and the integration of mental and behavioral health services into primary care to address the national crisis.
She also secured a Skilled Nursing Facility license and obtained $10 million in state funding to create San Francisco’s only hospital-based subacute care unit, addressing a critical gap in long-term care.
In addition to these accomplishments, Chinese Hospital was named to Newsweek’s Best-in-State Hospitals list for the second consecutive year, a reflection of its continued excellence in clinical outcomes, patient care, and community trust.
Dr. Zhang’s leadership was especially pivotal during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through culturally responsive outreach, bilingual education, testing, contact tracing, and vaccination, her team helped San Francisco’s Chinatown maintain one of the lowest infection and death rates in the nation. This successful model was later adopted by the San Francisco Department of Public Health and shared with other communities through grant-funded efforts.
“Dr. Zhang’s leadership has transformed Chinese Hospital into a model of innovation, compassion, and cultural competence to survive as the only remaining independent community hospital in the Bay Area with limited resources,” said Dr. Roger S. Eng, Chairman of the Chinese Hospital Board of Trustees. “Her work has touched thousands of lives and strengthened the healthcare safety net for our most vulnerable communities.”
Beyond operational leadership, Dr. Zhang is known for her collaborative and inclusive style. She fosters a culture of trust, learning, and shared purpose, while also championing women’s leadership in healthcare. She continues to mentor emerging female professionals and leads initiatives focused on advancing health for the underserved populations.
“I am deeply honored to be recognized among such accomplished women leaders,” said Dr. Zhang. “This award is not just a personal milestone—it reflects the unwavering dedication of our team at Chinese Hospital and our shared commitment to providing equitable, culturally responsive care. I hope this recognition inspires more women to lead with courage and compassion in shaping a healthier future for all.”
For over 125 years, Chinese Hospital has upheld its mission to provide affordable, culturally sensitive healthcare to the community. This recognition not only honors Dr. Zhang’s exceptional leadership but also reinforces Chinese Hospital’s legacy as a cornerstone of care, equity, and trusted service in the Bay Area.
