Chinese Hospital is proud to announce that Dr. Jian Zhang, its Chief Executive Officer, received the 2025 Jane Norbeck Distinguished Service Award by UCSF Nursing Alumni Association (NAA). This prestigious award honors UCSF nursing alumni who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service, making a lasting impact on the UCSF School of Nursing and the broader nursing profession.
Established in 1984, the award was renamed in 2003 to recognize Dr. Jane Norbeck, a distinguished graduate and former Dean of the UCSF School of Nursing (1989–1999). The award honors alumni who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to healthcare and nursing, alongside sustained service and leadership that support the growth and excellence of the UCSF School of Nursing.
A distinguished UCSF graduate and a visionary leader, Dr. Zhang exemplifies this honor through her transformative leadership, unwavering commitment to healthcare equity, and dedication to nursing education. As a Clinical Professor at UCSF, she has mentored the next generation of healthcare professionals for over two decades, enriching UCSF’s academic and clinical programs through collaborative research and strategic leadership.
“A distinguished alumna of the School of Nursing, Dr. Zhang has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to both the nursing profession and the UCSF community. Her strategic healthcare initiatives, including addressing health disparities in underserved populations, leading COVID-19 public health efforts, and securing historic funding for critical healthcare infrastructure at Chinese Hospital where she serves as CEO, reflect the very qualities this award was created to honor,” said the UCSF Nursing Alumni Association.
Dr. Zhang has long been a champion of healthcare access for underserved communities, leading groundbreaking public health initiatives. During the pandemic, her leadership was instrumental in maintaining one of the nation’s lowest infection and mortality rates in San Francisco’s Chinatown. She spearheaded culturally tailored outreach, mobile testing and vaccination efforts, and community-based contact tracing, ensuring critical healthcare services reached those most in need.
Beyond public health, Dr. Zhang’s strategic partnerships with UCSF Health, San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH), and other key institutions have significantly expanded healthcare access. She played a pivotal role in working with Assembly member Phil Ting to secure $10 million in state funding—a historic first for Chinese Hospital—to establish San Francisco’s only Subacute Unit, ensuring long-term care services remain available for the community.
Under her leadership, Chinese Hospital has been recognized in Newsweek’s Best-in-State Hospitals for the second consecutive year, a testament to its commitment to patient-centered care, clinical excellence, and community impact.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Jane Norbeck Distinguished Service Award,” said Dr. Zhang. “UCSF School of Nursing played a formative role in shaping my career, and I remain committed to advancing the nursing profession, fostering leadership, and ensuring equitable healthcare access for all.”
Dr. Zhang’s vision, leadership, and dedication continue to shape the future of healthcare and nursing. Her achievements serve as an inspiration, reaffirming the critical role of compassionate and innovative leadership in advancing patient care and health equity.
