What is COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe due to inflamed lungs/airways. It is often caused by long-term exposure to cigarette smoke, air pollution, or chemicals and most commonly affects middle-aged or older adults.  COPD will slowly develop and worsen as time goes on but with proper care, most symptoms can be controlled to lower the risk of linked conditions, such as heart disease and lung cancer.

What are symptoms of COPD?

There are two main types of COPD: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These two conditions usually occur together, varying in severity levels.

Symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath, especially when exercising
  • Chronic coughing, sometimes with phlegm
  • Wheezing/whistling sounds when breathing
  • A feeling of heaviness, tightness, or difficulty when taking a deep breath
  • Higher risk of lung infections, like pneumonia or flu

Treatment Options

  • Medications: Bronchodilators and corticosteroids can help manage symptoms and reduce flare-ups
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation: This program combines exercise, education, and support to improve lung function and overall health.
  • Oxygen Therapy: For patients with low oxygen levels, supplemental oxygen can enhance breathing and enable a more active lifestyle.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy diet, and engaging in regular exercise are critical for managing COPD.
  • Vaccinations: Staying current with flu and pneumonia vaccines can prevent infections that could worsen symptoms.
