Dragon Lighting Ceremony
On April 16, 2016, over 400 people witnessed the unveiling of the dragon mosaic community wall located at the terrace of the new patient tower. The dragon image was made up of 404 hexagon tiles of different color and sizes. Supporters donated $150,000 to $1,500 to reserve a tile. Over $3 million was raised from this community wall project.
Founders Preview
The 15 community organizations or associations under the leadership of the original Six Companies formed the Tung Wah Dispensary in 1899 when the Chinese were denied healthcare. The original 1925 building has been completely rebuilt as the new Patient Tower. On April 16, 2016, the 15 constituent organization members previewed the new Patient Tower.
Grand Opening VIP Reception
Chinese Hospital invited all its naming donors to the Exclusive Grand Opening VIP Reception on April 17, 2016, whereby over 500 guests had a chance to take a behind-the-scenes tour and food tasting in the new Patient Tower.
Chinese Hospital New Patient Tower Ribbon Cutting
Ninety-one years to the day, the San Francisco community celebrated the grand opening of its replacement new Patient Tower on April 18, 2016. The proceedings were led with remarks by Honorable Mayor Edwin Lee, former Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr., District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin, Dr. Edward A. Chow, Chair of the San Francisco Health Commission, Dr. Collin P. Quock, a retired physician and past Chief of Staff at Chinese Hospital. Mr. James K. Ho, Chinese Hospital Board President, Mel Lee, Board Member and Ms. Brenda Yee, Chief Executive Officer. The ceremony concluded with guided tours for hundreds of people from the community who eagerly awaited the pride of the new Patient Tower to open its doors.
